Maitake is a sophisticated and powerful Medicinal Mushroom. Like the Bushido
spirit of The Samurai , or Japanese Warriors it nobly and dutifully oversees our being. Wishing us to enjoy peace, harmony and ultimately find a sense of freedom
through life’s challenges.
Maitake is a potent immunological tonic, ( akin to its fellow mushrooms Reishi,
Coriolus , Cordyceps, and Chaga ), facilitating a cohesive and proficient
immunological response. ( Its polysaccharide D / MD fractions have been
identified to be the most immunologically active compounds .) It helps to reduce
insulin resistance, therefore it may support our metabolic health, helping
to balance blood sugar and improve subfertility ( due to PCOS). It is also a
lung, stomach, spleen, kidney/ adrenal, liver, cardiovascular and neurological
tonic. Interestingly it may also support our digestive system to absorb micronutrients better and is recognised to have a natural synergistic action with vitamin c.
The fungus is known to grow to the size of a small chicken, hence its English name
Hen of the Woods. The Japanese name for Maitake translates to Dancing
Mushroom, most likely inspired by its likeness in appearance to a kaleidoscope
of butterflies. Its spirit may help us find a sense of order out of seeming
chaos, as it gifts us with a greater sense of support, perspective, and protection
on all levels of our being. As we grow from the inside out, this
manifests within our outer world and gives us a renewed sense of courage and
strength.
When I think of Maitake I think of the Warrior Spirit, particularly that of the
Samurai, tigers, and the beautiful teachings of Confucius.
It is a fierce and dedicated protector of ( homeostatic ) balance.
