Cordyceps is an incredible and majestic mushroom, whose Chinese name translates to Winter Worm, Summer Grass. It is traditionally foraged on Tibetan Plateau in Southwest China and Himalayan regions of Bhutan and Nepal, growing parasitically (symbiotically) on/with caterpillars, 35000 meters above sea level.
A little like the teachings of the Himalayan sages, who share its birthplace is has an ever so slightly mysterious spirit, certainly part of its beauty. It has a deeply restorative quality, powerfully supporting transformation and transcendence on all levels of being as we journey through the cycles of our lives.
Cordyceps (akin to its fellow mushrooms Chaga, reishi, and Cordyceps ) is a revered immunological tonic. Its reverse transcriptase activity (mediated via cordycepin, 3- deoxyadenosine) is the key mechanism via which it assists our body to destroy abnormal cells and viruses. It helps to support metabolic health, significantly improving cellular (ATP) production via its enhancement in mitochondrial electron transport. It is considered wonderfully strengthening for our lungs, kidneys/adrenals, and endocrine system (improving fertility and libido in both sexes), together with supporting our brain and bones.
Like the all-seeing and all-knowing Egyptian Eye of Providence Cordyceps is a powerful protector of our being. It helps us to gain great strength and resilience through trusting life’s experiences with childlike innocence, facing challenges with an open heart and sincere surrender. This in turn gives us the greatest transformational potential of all. As the Buddha said enlightenment is not about finding a certain point. It is about being in the moment. Being present.
When I think of Cordyceps I am reminded of the teachings of Shiva, Sarasvati, and White Buffalo Woman. How when we have the grace to let go greater knowledge, wisdom, health, happiness, and healing may come our way.
